The questions that come up most on install and setup. Everything here is from the Itsframe docs — if your issue is not listed, reach us from Contact & support.
The SmartScreen warning
When you run the installer, Windows may show “Windows protected your PC”. This happens because the installer is not code-signed yet.
- Choose More info → Run anyway to continue. Your projects and settings carry over between versions.
- The auto-updater still verifies each release by its checksum for file integrity, so updates are protected even while the build is unsigned.
- Code signing is planned; it needs a Windows code-signing certificate.

Common questions
Windows shows a SmartScreen warning — is that normal?
Yes. The installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you. Choose More info → Run anyway. The auto-updater still verifies each release by its checksum for file integrity.
How do I verify the download?
A checksum is published with every release on the releases page, so you can verify the installer before running it.
Do I need an account to edit?
No. The editor runs without an account and works offline. You only sign in (from Integrations › Account & credits) to activate the credit-metered cloud AI.
How do updates work?
Itsframe keeps itself up to date: it checks the releases page, downloads a new version in the background, and installs it when you restart — or you can choose Check for updates from the app menu.
Playback stutters on 4K footage — what can I do?
Itsframe automatically makes a small proxy of 4K footage in the background so the preview plays smoothly; exports and frame grabs always use the original. You can also lower the preview resolution (Full, 1/2, 1/4 or 1/8), and render previews with Enter so heavy stretches are cached.
Do I need Blender?
Only for 3D titles and 3D renders, which use Blender 4.2 or newer. Everything else is built in. The Whisper speech model downloads once (about 200 MB) the first time you transcribe on your device.
The app crashed — did I lose my work?
Itsframe has crash recovery and version history: every save, plus an automatic snapshot every ten minutes while you edit, is restorable. Projects also survive being moved between folders and drives.
Can I use my own AI agent instead of credits?
Yes. Connect ChatGPT, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot or any MCP client — it runs on your subscription with that provider and spends zero Itsframe credits. See Connect your own agent.
